Outcome Measures

By the end of this chapter, the reader should be able to:

  1. Describe the key outcome measures used in the RISE programme and other denervated muscle research, and explain what each measure reveals about treatment response

  2. Perform or interpret a strength-duration assessment using chronaxie and rheobase to evaluate denervation severity and monitor progress

  3. Select and apply a practical set of outcome measures appropriate for clinical monitoring of patients receiving ES for denervated muscle

My original training as a control systems engineer taught me a principle that has served me well throughout my career in bioengineering and rehabilitation engineering: if you want to control something well, you must measure what matters. This is not just an engineering aphorism. It describes a fundamental requirement for effective rehabilitation.
