I'm lucky enough to have had a long and broad exposure to many different techniques of electrical stimulation. The history is fascinating. The results can be spectacular, and despite the field's long history, I still think we are just scratching the surface of what can be achieved. However, for a long time, using electrical stimulation for denervated muscle was uncharted territory for me, and I guess many other people. In the 1970s, I was told that not only would electrical stimulation not be effective for denervated muscle, but if you did manage to apply it, you might end up burning the skin or worse. That all changed with the publication of the RISE study, which features heavily in this book.
